Outstanding start to 2016/17 Season at Malcolm Wilson Memorial Gala

Malcolm Wilson Memorial Gala

A huge contingent of over 70 swimmers represented Pioneer 79 Swimming Club, along with swimmers from many other clubs around Lancashire to support a Gala in memory of the late Malcolm Wilson recently.  Malcolm, a stalwart figure in Lancashire Swimming and Swim North West sadly passed away earlier this year.  Malcolm had enriched the swimming world through his invaluable contribution to the sport over many years, particularly in relation to the training and development of officials.  Malcolm had been a past member of the Lancashire County Executive, past President of Bolton & District SWPA and a Life Member of the North Lancashire Swimming Association.  His presence will be missed by his many friends in the swimming community.

A group of volunteers organised a Level 3 competition in his memory, and the event was as predicted, heavily oversubscribed!  The atmosphere during the competition was friendly with the many clubs and swimmers thoroughly enjoying the day.  A 2 minute ‘applause’ was held at the beginning of the second session in Malcolm’s memory, a fitting tribute.  All funds raised at the event were donated to Malcolm’s chosen charities, ‘Bolton Hospice’ and ‘The Christie’.

11 Year old Harry Robinson shows off his huge haul of 7 golds and 1 silver medal
With the competition being held so early in the season, swimmers were not really expecting to hit their best times, however, our Pioneer swimmers produced times which were not only ‘around’ their best, but new personal best times were being set by many, showing an extremely promising start to the new season.

Head Coach, Mike Wilson was delighted with the overall performance of the Pioneer 79 team.  A number of swimmers were competing for Pioneer for the first time, be it that they had just turned the magic ‘9 years of age’, or having joined from other swim programmes, this competition gave him a great opportunity for him to see them compete under race conditions.  Mike also would like to take this opportune moment to not only congratulate everyone on their achievements, but also to sincerely thank so many swimmers from Pioneer for supporting this memorial event for Malcolm.
